As the world gets more careful about its waste management and carbon consumption, two large brands in the Philippines have doubled down on their eco construction and used Green Antz ecopavers in their outdoor builds

You might have noticed this open space in BGC by the NEO towers. The pavers provide great aesthetic while ensuring that water run off can be managed.

NEO Office PH and JEFRE Studio designed and built an amazing green space in the heart of the business district. Green spaces, according to the latest science, can help our cognitive process by allowing us to relax and focus more – thereby increasing productivity and supporting individual wellness.

In Mandaluyong, McDonalds used some of the products for its parking lot and walls, plus combining it with charging stations and other in-store merchandise on taking care of the environment.

These two companies are just the beginning as we see a shift in the number of organizations taking the bull by the horns to deal with the waste and climate issue head on.

Waste is one of the country’s biggest challenges – drowning our seas and suffocating sea creatures. We turn valuable land into dumpsites that could have been used for high value spaces and we spend millions to ship our waste – only for it to end up in our ecosystems. Clouds of millions of microplastics have been detected even at high altitude peaks and all the way to low sea depths and ocean floors. With Microplastics being detected in breastmilk and even bypassing the brain barrier via the bloodstream, there is practically no space on earth or within us that does not contain some traces of plastics by now.

Since the entry of plastic into our economy, the item has made itself ubiquitous. As the population grew, and the demand for products increased in different islands, plastic in different forms started to become the dominant form of packaging as it is more flexible, lighter and cheaper than glass as well as less prone to breakage or to cause injuries when broken.

As a result, every community on every island or remote location is inundated with sachets, making the Philippines the 3rd largest single-use plastic waste contributor in the world (right after Indonesia, with the Phils. “contributing” over 460,000 Tons of plastic per year to oceans alone).

Some fishermen in the eastern coast of Mindanao claim that they are fishing plastic almost half the time they catch fish. The harmful effects of this “flood” of plastic contamination in our biology, chemistry and the entire ecosystem are going to be felt and researched over the coming decades. What is obvious for now is that for us to be able to reverse the trajectory of this unseen pandemic, we will need a system-wide set of solutions which may, over time, result in the introduction of viable alternatives to the current forms of plastics.
